Why do alcoholics need to undergo addiction treatment?

My father is going to be away from us for a long time because he has to go into rehab. I don’t understand. Can’t he just quit on his own? Why does he have to go away?

Alcoholism is not just a problem, it’s a chronic disease, a progressive illness. Your dad can’t recover on his own. He needs the help of other people. He’ll be fine at the rehab. He’ll be able to get therapy, counseling, and medication. It’ll be easier for him to recover there because he’ll be away from the temptations of alcohol. He will also be with other persons who knows what he’s going through and are struggling with the very same thing that he’s going through. He’ll be well taken care of there. Don’t worry. Just hope that your father will recover soon. I’ll keep your family in my prayers.

Alcoholism is an addiction, some can quit with little help, others need allot. Depends on the person.

Because sometimes alcoholics are viewed in the sense as it being a disease. It is in there genes. It is like treating cancer or diabetes. You have to get treatment to arrest it at some point and get back on track.

Withdrawing from alcohol or drug addiction can be very dangerous while detoxing. You must be in a medical setting to be monitored and get the medical attention needed. After medical detox, a person needs structured supervision to learn behavior modification and changing their way of coping with problems other than turning to alcohol.

Amelia, your Dad’s in the best place he can be going even though it’s hard to see him go. He needs help to stop drinking and, no, he can’t do it on his own. See, the body of an alcoholic and a drug addict is different from others. Their liver’s operate differently. Studies have even shown in some scans that even the brains of an addict/alcoholic are different.
Your Dad needs help that most doctors can’t give him and you should be happy that he is taking this important first step. And as hard as it may be for you to be away from your Dad, I assure you that when he comes back home, you are truly getting your Dad back.

go to al anon,and get some free literature it will help to explain why alcoholism is a disease,and also teaches loved one’s how to deal with an active/ or sober alkie,there is also on line meetings if you dont want to be seen at alonon,good luck ,oh when your dad comes home if he gets the big book of alcoholics anonymous read to chapter called the family afterwards it will help alot .
