Why did McCain say on 60 Minutes on Sunday that he wasn’t a better man than his alcoholic father?

Why would I want a president that doens’t think he is better than his father with a drinking problem? That isn’t noble.

Because alcoholism is a diease and has no bearing as to the content of a mans character – period

He’s not better than anyone.
We’re talking about a man that valued his country more than his own life.
You are missing the whole point to his sentiment. Nobody is better than anyone else. Yes, we all make different decisions, but that doesn’t make us better. Your decision-making skills may be better, but your human existence isn’t more valuable than an alcoholic’s. If his father was a mass murderer, that’d be another thing.

Maybe that is how he feels. Nothing to get excited about.

Possibly, but take it as it was meant.
Alcoholism is a disease that his father suffered from, then he was able to conquer it. Don’t judge him for it. Do you judge Ted Kennedy and all the others who also suffer from drug or alcohol addiction?
And remember that McCain’s father also served our country with honor as an Admiral in the US Navy for many years, and he may have been a wonderful father.

When I was a young man, I thought my dad didn’t know squat.
Now that I’m older, with kids of my own, I wish I was half the man my dad was.
If you’re still working out issues with your old man, do it somewhere else. This is a political forum.

Does Obama think that he is better than his alcoholic father? McCains father did not run off and leave him and his mother.

It’s a humble way of saying, “Except by the grace of God, I would have followed that same path.”
No person should take personal credit for being a man of integrity. There are so many temptations that could cause ANY PERSON to make bad choices. If a person believes there is someone to be accountable to, and who believes God is who He says He is, they are less likely to make bad choices. God not only expects the best from people, but He also loves people deeply. Faith is a deep inner core that is like a compass for a ship.

Because his father was not Castrated and tortured in a P.O.W.Camp fighting an unpopular and un-winnable war.
His father was a much better man because he never lost his mind.
His father didn’t crash every plane he ever flew.
His father didn’t rise to political office on the thin credentials of a POW
His father was a decorated American by his own character, not on the shoestrings of a spouse’s wealth.
His father had honor and courage, not delusional rhetoric.
John knows he isn’t half the man physically or in character of his father and he was reacting truthfully in his interview.

Lets see, Maybe McCain knows all about drinking
At the Academy, aside being known as a “rowdy, raunchy, underachiever” who resented authority, Cadet McCain became infamous as a leader among his fellow midshipmen for organizing “off-Yard activities” and hard drinking parties. Robert Timberg wrote in his book, The Nightingale’s Song, that “being on liberty with John McCain was like being in a train wreck.”
McCain’s grades were “marginal.” He drew so many demerits for breaking curfew and other discipline issues that he graduated fifth from the bottom of the class of 1958. Despite his low “class standing,” and no doubt because of the influence of his family of famous Admirals, McCain was leap-frogged ahead of more qualified applicants and granted a coveted slot to be trained as a navy pilot.
Good Party Animal – Bad Pilot:
He spent the next two and a half years as a “naval aviator in training” at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas, flying A-1 Skyraiders.
While a pilot trainee, McCain continued to party hard. He drove a Corvette and dated an exotic dancer named “Marie the Flame of Florida.” Timberg wrote that McCain “learned to fly at Pensacola, though his performance was below par, at best good enough to get by. He liked flying, but didn’t love it.”

Country first.
It is Obama who thinks he is better than McCains dad, and everyone else for that matter.
