How to deal with shopping addiction?
Posted by adminSep 6
I really think I have a shopping problem. I find myself at the mall every weekend, and at local stores during the week (The mall is kinda far from where I live) I will go into a store with 1-3 hundred and when I leave it’ll feel like I barely bought anything but all my money is gone. (When in reality I actually buy a lot but it always feels like I need more) My boyfriends hasn’t said anything.. he’s a gentlemen and holds all my bags for me but will always be like ” Are you finished yet? We’ve been here forever “… Is there such thing as shopping addiction? My father recently passed away and it’s been hard for me, but when I shop everything is better, I don’t think of the past and it really calms me down..I know it sounds crazy. :/ Anyone else have this problem?

Its ok if you don’t waste money on anything. Go relax, take a deep breath and everything will be alright. Try going somewhere that will help you instead of shopping. If nothing does, well, I guess you can keep doing that. I am sure though that it will soon go away.

1. Return everything you’ve bought and haven’t worn and used.
2. Use that money to start a saving account.
3. Cut up your credit cards.
4. Only get $100 cash out at the beginning of the week.
5. Only use cash.
6. Get into a therapy program that specializing in this.
Know you aren’t alone. It gets better. But you have to deal with the crap behind it. You seem to have figured it out – sorry about your father, but shopping doesn’t bring him back, right? Ask your boyfriend to go into therapy with you so he can help you hold yourself accountable.

Yes many people have this problem. You can ask yourself questions as do I really need this item. Make a list of what you are going for and only get those items. If you buy something return it. I usually go to Walmart and buy several things to get it out of my system and then take them back the next day with a receipt (and no I don’t wear or use them). Give your boyfriend your purse/wallet/money/credit card and tell him to help you only buy what you need. You could give yourself a budget for the week and last but not least leave your wallet/money in the car (glove compartment) if you find something you really want then you have to go back and get the wallet/money and you may find yourself not wanting to go back. Hope this helps.
