ELYRIA, Ohio – A judge Monday rejected the defense that a teenage boy opened fire on his family because he was addicted to video games, convicting him of wounding his clergyman father and killing his mother after they fought over a video game.
Lawyers for Daniel Petric, 17, didn’t contest that the boy shot his parents in October 2007, but insisted his youth and video game addiction made him less responsible. But Common Pleas Judge James Burge disagreed and pointed to evidence the boy plotted the crime for weeks.
Petric was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges. He faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole. The judge didn’t set a sentencing date.
Prosecutors said Petric planned to kill his parents because he was angry that his father would not allow him to play the video game “Halo 3,” in which players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

I would try him as an adult in a prison. Since insanity wasn’t a defense, you better believe he is not mentally ill. (Or the lawyers would have jumped all over that.) But he definitely needs counselling, BIG time. How sad.
He was angry at his father, why did he have to shoot his mom? I have little sympathy for him. This goes FAR beyond the stupid video game.

Sadly many parents use video games and tv to teach kids instead of themselves.

Anyone who kills, a 4 year old, a 10 year old, a 17 or year a 30 year old a 87 year old, a person who is “mentally ill”
If you kill someone, you should be shot on sight if found guilty!
The ONLY exeptions are if it self-defence, or 100% accident (out hunting, or some kid runs in front of a car on you), or war..

The father, who recovered from the shooting, testified that he expected a pleasant surprise. Then his head went numb from a gunshot. His wife, Susan, 43, died of gunshot wound to the head”

honestly though i dont know, because, hes young and everything, he shoulnt be let off!!!! I think he needs serious therapy, and prison. But i dont know.
im 50/50 that he should get parole, but he shouldnt. I feel that he should, because hes young, and needs to live his life, but he shouldnt becaues he killed TWO people, and he planned it so he knew what he was doing.

In any case, This teen needs some sort of incarceration. Based on the fact that he IS 17, I think prison. Accidental homicide should be Juvenile, but this kid Killed in cold blood.

He should receive both Mental Health Treatment and be placed in a Juvenile System. Even though he is 17 years old, its insane to say “video games made me kill my parents” He is old enough to understand consequences and therefore should face up to them after killing his parents. He needs to receive mental health treatment as well.
