How can I get social security numbers for my sister ‘s children that Im taking care of to get Medical for them

My niece and nephew have been neglected and I have them in my custody. My nephew needs emergency dental care and my niece has scoliosis-orthopedic. The mother, my sister will NOT give me their SS #’s so that I can get them medical. Im frustrated and need help. Im not getting any fianancial aide for them and will be fine in a few weeks financially but still she doesn’t want to cooperate. This is the same sister that has a drug addiction.The father just left out of state with girlfriend and didn’t supply me with nothing but Power of Attorney. I need to have Legal Documents stating I have custody in order for SS dept to release them. What can I do?

Go to SSA.GOV and order replacement social security cards for them. You can sign as their guardian, since you have custody. And have the new cards sent to your address. For proof of legal custody, you should go back to the courthouse – go to the clerk’s office and ask for a certified copy of the judge’s order, which gave custody of the kids to you.

Is the department of family services in your district aware of the situation? If your sister has ever applied for benefits they will have the information. You may also try contacting the doctor she took them to when they were in her custody to see if he/she would be willing to listen to the situation and provide any information.

What I would do If I was you is call children services and let them know of the situation. Have them forcefully give you custody of the children so you can get the SS#’s and everything you need for them . Unless they find you to be unfit yourself. Then your screwed.

You need to file in Family Court for custody of these children. That is your first step.
Secondly, you need to go down with whatever you have to social security and go from there, if they can’t help you they will know who can!!!
Third, go down to dept of social services and apply for medicaid, tell them the situtation and you will be surprised how willing they are to help children.

You need to start a paper trail starting with DYFS DIVISION OF SOCIAL SERVICE!
Report your sister and get documentation from them and they can help you get there social security numbers from school or force your sister to provide these numbers..
Also depending on what State you live in they can get emergency medical and dental coverage for them..
Your a great aunt for taking care of those kids!
They will love you forever!

The best place to start is going to be the Social Securtity Office’s website at http://www.socialsecurity.gov. There is a wealth of information there and if all else fails look up your nearest Social Security Office to go to. Any documents are going to help in this case such as birth certificates. But check out the website or your local office, also listed on the website is a toll free number you can call.

If you have the legal custody, then you are legal guardian. There’s no reason why any government would hold information if your statements are true. Should be easy enough to get birth certificate from county records clerk which could be used as ID to obtain SS#..however, if you have legal custody you could get ss# straight from SSA office. Just matter of showing them court documents assigning you as legal guardian.
Easiest way would be to go to their old doctor, whichever they saw before and ask for the records to be released, the full records. It should contain SS#. However, due to HIPAA, you’ll have to still prove that you have the legal custody.
