Have to push brake pedal all the way to the floor to stop?!!?

I NEVER had to do this before, what is wrong with my car? I ask many of the guys/men that I know and they all give me different answers. My step father is a mechanic but I’ve had enough with his alcoholism. Anyway, this just started after work today, out of nowhere! I’m going crazy. And it’s scary. I have things to do tomorrow, and I need my car. Should I try and talk to a mechanic somewhere? See what they say? I got my boyfriend to drive my car, he noticed it. He’s driven it before. He said it seems like my front brakes aren’t working. How big of a problem is that? He filled up my brake fluid and pumped the brakes a little but they’re still messed up! Please help!!
It’s a 1997 Chevy Malibu.
Rear brake pads were recently replaced.
Front, I don’t know about them.
I bought the car used.
Front breaks are drums.
Rear are something else.
Um…ALSO, leaky greenish stuff. I forgot to mention that. =(

The brake pads or rotors may be completely worn down; when’s the last time you had them looked at?
Or, you may have air in the brake system, in which case, they will have to be bled and refilled.
In the mean time, that is a VERY dangerous way to drive your car; you could be seriously hurt. If at all possible, find another way to get to work until the problem is fixed.

front brakes and back breaks all work at the same time, your boyfriend is silly, take your car to a reputable mechanic and have them look at it.

It could be caused by many things and to fully answer the question we need more information. what type of car is it. does it have vacuum brakes or hydro-boost. Are the brakes disc or drum, etc

sounds like a broken brake line. check for a spot on the ground and that will give you a general location. good luck..

it sounds like u have nomore brake pads or its very very thin.. i suggest that either u go somewhere tommorrow get your brakes check.. its usually free of charge but some places charge around 25 dollars to check it out.. try midas or pepboys or firestone if any of the company i said above is within your area.. I suggest that you change your brakes pads, dont be cheap if your rotor is under the specs change it, if its within spec dont be cheap and resurface it.. and bleed your system… take care.. Schooots

If you have to push the pedal all the way to the floor and this happened all of a sudden then you have a hole in a brake line somewhere. Please do get the car fixed tommorrow. It is very dangerous to drive that way.

OK first thing DON’T drive it that would be dangerous. If the brake pedal is low take it to a reputable repair shop you have a problem! don’t just add fluid and bleed the brakes. if their is air in the system it got their some how that’s not good. DON’T take it to autozone. ( any auto mechanic worth his or her salt would agree) you need to have some one that knows what their doing inspect it for you not a parts store. Their allot of shops that can get it in and done in a very timely manner. best of luck to you

I’ve had a master cylinder need replaced in a couple of cars I had owned. The brake pedal clear to the floor. Get to a stop sign and you feel like your not going to stop. Go to a mechanic and talk to them and have it checked.

if your boyfriend had to add fluid to the master cylinder it could be that your leaking fluid or your brakes need replacing. if your not leaking fluid, it could be your master cylinder is bad.

I have had this problem a couple of times in the past, and it turned out that I just needed brake fluid. If you don’t know how to fix the problem yourself, then take your car to a mechanic, ASAP.
