can i refuse to be god mother to my best friends child until the father qiuts smoking crack?

my best friend and my boyfriend’s brother (20 and 23 respectively) are expecting their first child in six months. they have asked my boyfriend and i to be god parents. they fight all the time violently because of his excessive crack cocaine addiction. she keeps telling me that she is going to make him go to rehab, but the deadlines go by the wayside and she always gives it. i’ve tried to break it down to her and make her understand the seriousness of the situation, but nothing seems to work. is it of for me to tell her that i wont be the god mother if she doesn’t do what is best for her child? i am very flattered by the offer but i want what is best for her and the baby.

If by “godparent” you mean “person who is involved in the child’s life, mentor and guide and friend,” it seems that this makes it _more_ important for you to step up, not less.

Perhaps you consenting to be godparents IS the best thing for the baby. As far as I understand the process, if anything were to happen to the child’s biological parents you would step in and be their guardian, right? That can’t be a bad thing to have on standby with this sort of situation – one that can easily end in tragedy.
I don’t think this is enough leverage to try and convince her to sort it out. You’ll need to try and get through to her some other way in my opinion.

“god” mother, is the spiritual leader for the child. If the parents are not raising the child in proper religious beliefs, then it is your duty to instruct that child in them. You are also supposed to be a mentor, and should try your best to be the child’s friend.
So in a way you are more there for the child and not for the parents. You should really know they true meaning of a “god mother”.
But if something were to happen to them, they would have to have a will stating that you are the one who would take care of the child if something happens to them.
So yes you should be the god mother so you can point the child in the right direction since the mother and father wont be the best examples.
